Build a cash budget before judging affordability
Start with a written price and financing offer. Separate the down payment from recurring bills and identify financed add-ons. Insurance, local charges and servicing should come from quotes or your own estimates for the particular vehicle; a generic calculator does not know them.
For an existing car, distinguish cash paid this month from depreciation in its value. Depreciation matters for an economic comparison, but it is not a monthly bill to subtract from the bank balance. Keep a cash-flow total and a broader ownership-cost analysis separate.
Assemble a fictional monthly total
In this example the installment is 350, insurance 120, fuel 90 and a chosen maintenance reserve 40. The resulting monthly planning amount is 600. A vehicle with a lower installment could still cost more overall if insurance, running costs or the loan term differ.
The maintenance reserve is not a repair quote, and the running costs are not market averages. Registration, parking and tolls are omitted from the example and would need to be added where relevant. Reusing the same assumptions for every car can conceal meaningful differences.
Compare the contract and the budget together
Use consistent ownership periods and annual distance when comparing cars. Ask whether the loan includes a balloon, variable rate, early-payment condition or optional product. The CFPB’s US auto-loan guidance recommends understanding financing options and checking the paperwork at closing.
Numbriv’s car-loan calculator models the loan under its displayed assumptions. It does not provide an insurance quote, appraise a trade-in, determine local vehicle tax or confirm lender approval. Changing currency cannot supply those missing country and product rules.

Common questions
Does the example include depreciation?
No. It is a cash-budget illustration. Depreciation belongs in a separate economic ownership comparison.
Are the running costs typical for my country?
No. They are invented inputs; replace them with relevant quotes and your expected usage.
