Separate regular, annual and flexible costs
The Banque de France education portal Mes questions dโargent provides budgeting resources covering expenses and organising money. Use it as background, then build your own categories from actual statements. A category should explain where the money goes rather than impose a universal percentage on every household.
Keep rent, utilities and contractual payments distinct from expenses you can change more easily. For a known annual bill, record both its amount and due date. An average monthly reserve is only adequate if enough contributions can be made before the bill arrives.
Do not count the same money in two pots
Money reserved for an upcoming bill is different from money available for a longer-term goal. If you move the reserve into a separate account, it remains part of the same household resources. The transfer should not be counted as new income or as a second expense.
Use take-home income for this plan and list irregular receipts separately. These general tools do not calculate French payroll deductions, benefits, pensions or local tax. Record an amount from those sources only after you have established what is actually available for your circumstances.
A fictional EUR allocation worksheet
The sample below treats annual bills as a monthly allocation before the goal contribution. It assumes no investment return and no starting savings. The figures do not represent official French expense norms or a recommended level of household saving.
| Monthly allocation | EUR |
|---|---|
| Take-home income | โฌ2,900.00 |
| Regular household costs | โฌ1,650.00 |
| Existing repayments | โฌ150.00 |
| Annual bills: 3,600 รท 12 | โฌ300.00 |
| Available after listed costs | โฌ800.00 |
| Chosen goal contribution | โฌ500.00 |
| Unallocated after that contribution | โฌ300.00 |
With no assumed growth and no starting savings, a โฌ6,000.00 goal takes 12 monthly contributions of โฌ500.00. This excludes taxes, fees, changing prices and missed contributions.
Compare the plan with actual spending
At the end of the month, compare planned and actual costs by category. A difference may reflect timing, a one-off purchase or a new regular commitment. Adjust the next plan instead of treating every change as a failure of the original estimate.
For a loan, compare the providerโs full schedule and charges, not just a rate entered into a no-fee calculator. Keep insurance and any variable-rate conditions separate. Currency selection changes the unit label without converting money or adding French legal rules to a general formula.
