Saudi Arabia: compare SAR financing offers beyond the installment

A smaller monthly installment can hide a longer repayment period. Put offers on the same basis: the same amount made available to you, the payment dates, the charges and the full term.

Start with the written offer and schedule

Use documents for the actual product and customer circumstances. Record the amount of financing, any deductions before disbursement, the installment schedule and any payment that falls outside the regular pattern. A comparison is misleading if one offer provides less usable money.

SAMA’s consumer-financing regulations discuss disclosure of APR, total cost, installment amounts and charges. They also distinguish APR from other rate descriptions. Use the lender’s applicable APR disclosure and current product documents rather than deriving an APR by dividing total charges by the number of years.

A fictional equal-principal comparison

Both examples below assume SAR 50,000 is made available and the stated fees are paid separately upfront. There are no other payments, deductions or costs in the example. These are arithmetic illustrations, not available products, a legal fee assessment or a statement that you qualify.

Fictional SAR example — not a quote or spending recommendation
AssumptionOffer AOffer B
Amount made availableSAR 50,000.00SAR 50,000.00
Monthly installmentSAR 1,600.00SAR 1,250.00
Number of payments3648
Separate upfront feeSAR 300.00SAR 200.00
Total cash paidSAR 57,900.00SAR 60,200.00
Cost above amount receivedSAR 7,900.00SAR 10,200.00

Offer B costs SAR 2,300.00 more in nominal cash across the full term, despite its smaller installment. The totals are installments × months + the separate upfront fee. This is not an APR or a recommendation.

Read monthly cost and lifetime cost together

Offer B has a lower installment but twelve more payments. The total-cash comparison makes that trade-off visible. It does not price the value of paying money at different dates, and it is not an APR calculation. Neither offer is automatically the right choice.

Check the installment against your actual recurring expenses and a lower-income scenario. An affordability assessment by a provider and your own household budget answer different questions; neither should be reduced to one assumed percentage on this page.

Keep the contract type and exclusions clear

Ask about optional services, mandatory charges, insurance or takaful, variable cost terms and the written terms for early settlement or missed payments. Use the actual schedule for an Islamic financing contract; the general interest-based loan formula is not a murabaha or ijara model.

The Saudi salary calculator is limited to its documented expatriate-wage scenario. It is not a universal payroll result. Do not substitute its figure for your own net income when contributions, benefits or deductions differ.

Keep a comparable record

Save a copy of each offer and note its date. If the provider revises a payment, term or fee, update the entire comparison. Comparing an old advertised installment with a current written offer can leave out material differences.

Before deciding, ask the provider to explain any amount you cannot reconcile between financing received, fees and total payments. The calculator can check arithmetic, but it does not certify the contract or supply personalized financing advice.

Questions about this guide

Is the total-cash comparison an APR?

No. It adds installments and the stated upfront fee. APR requires the applicable timing and cost methodology.

Does the generic loan tool model Islamic finance?

No. Use the actual product’s contract and payment schedule for that comparison.
