VAT-inclusive versus VAT-exclusive prices: the correct reverse formula

Add tax to an exclusive price by multiplying by one plus the rate. To remove included tax, divide the total by one plus the rate; simply subtracting the rate gives the wrong base.

Identify whether the entered price already contains tax

An exclusive amount is the base before the modeled VAT. An inclusive total already contains both base and tax. The same number produces different results depending on which definition you choose, so verify the label on the quote or invoice first.

Numbriv’s UAE tool uses the stated 5% standard-rate arithmetic for a supported supply. This does not establish whether a particular item is standard-rated, zero-rated, exempt or outside scope. The FTA’s official guidance and VAT calculator provide the relevant background.

Reverse a five-percent example

For a fictional base price of AED 1,000, 5% is AED 50 and the inclusive amount is AED 1,050. Reversing that total gives 1,050 ÷ 1.05 = 1,000. The included tax is 1,050 − 1,000 = 50. Multiplying 1,050 by 5% would instead give 52.50, which is not the included tax.

In general, the included-tax fraction is rate divided by one plus rate. Use the rate as a decimal in that expression. Round only according to the calculation or invoice method being used; repeated rounding of intermediate amounts can change cents.

Keep the arithmetic separate from tax compliance

The one-amount calculator does not determine registration, input-tax recovery, reverse charge, imports or filing obligations. A mathematically correct amount can still be inappropriate if the chosen tax treatment is wrong. Check the supply and its applicable rules before using the standard-rate mode.

Use the Saudi or other country tool only for its own stated jurisdiction and rate. Changing the currency display on a general tool is not a way to apply a different tax system. Keep the actual invoice and evidence supporting its treatment.

Common questions

Can I remove included VAT by subtracting 5%?

No. Divide the inclusive total by 1.05 to find the base for this 5% example.

Does the calculator decide whether a supply is taxable?

No. It calculates one supported standard-rate amount after the tax treatment has been established.
