For ordinary FLSA time-and-a-half: eligible overtime hours × half the FLSA regular rate = premium. At a $20 regular rate, 5 eligible overtime hours yield a $50 premium, although the full overtime pay is $150. State-only, contractual, daily or double-time extras do not automatically qualify. Special FLSA methods and tips affecting the regular rate need separate review.

For tips, check the IRS eligible occupation list, voluntary-payment rules and employer reporting. Code TP includes cash tips and is not proof that all are eligible. This model excludes specified service trades and Form 4137 situations.

What “no tax on overtime and tips” means

Both provisions lower taxable income when their conditions are met. They do not remove gross wages from payroll taxes, guarantee that all tips or overtime are deductible, or promise a dollar-for-dollar refund. Under current law the deductions apply for tax years 2025–2028; this tool implements 2026 only.

Our overtime input is restricted to the ordinary FLSA premium. The tool does not determine an exemption, regular rate, occupation or business classification. If your pay arrangement falls outside the stated scope, use the IRS guidance or obtain an individual review.

Caps and income phase-outs

Qualified overtime is capped at $12,500 per return, or $25,000 married filing jointly. Qualified tips have a separate $25,000 limit per return, including joint returns. Each deduction is reduced separately by $100 for each full $1,000 of modified AGI above $150,000, or $300,000 joint. The reduction applies to the smaller of the qualified amount and its cap, never below zero. Married filing separately is unsupported and cannot claim these deductions.

The currently linked 2025 Schedule 1-A explicitly rounds the phase-out quotient down. It is cited for arithmetic, not 2026 reporting relief. Final 2026 Schedule 1-A filing instructions require a separate review when published.

What changes on a 2026 W-2?

Code TT in box 12 reports qualified overtime; code TP reports cash tips provided to the employer. Box 14b reports tipped occupation codes. A reported amount is not automatically the allowed deduction: actual eligibility, caps and phase-outs still apply. Our W-2 mode limits overtime to the lower of the eligible premium paid and TT, and eligible tips to the employer-reported TP amount. It excludes Form 4137, 1099 and other reporting situations.

IRS overtime guidance says to request a W-2c for omitted or understated TT. For 2026, the excess over the reported amount cannot be claimed using the 2025 transition relief. An overstated TT also does not permit deducting more than the eligible premium actually paid. Will my next paycheck increase?

This comparison estimates annual tax liability. It does not calculate employer withholding or predict the next check. For overtime, the IRS says employers may account for the expected deduction in withholding only after receiving an updated valid W-4. The 2026 Step 4(b) deductions worksheet and IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help assess that decision. Do not copy this tool’s full deduction into a W-4 without completing the official worksheet. Methodology and supported scope

Use one employee’s annual gross wages, including full overtime and employer-reported cash tips, without adding either amount twice. This simplified model assumes no pre-tax benefits or other income, so AGI and modified AGI equal gross wages. It supports single, eligible head of household, and married filing jointly with one earner. The user must confirm the required valid Social Security numbers and all eligibility conditions; Numbriv never asks for the numbers.

Compute 2026 annual federal income tax from the standard deduction and rate schedule before the two additional deductions. Apply reporting limits in W-2 mode, then each statutory cap and phase-out. Subtract the allowed deductions from taxable income, floor it at zero and recompute federal tax. Savings equal the tax difference, not the deduction itself. Social Security, Medicare and annual Additional Medicare Tax remain unchanged; no deduction is applied to their wages. Round monetary components to cents. Divide annual savings by the selected number of periods only to show an average.

Cash after modeled federal taxes is gross wages minus the estimated federal income tax and employee FICA. State/local taxes, employer withholding, credits, contributions and other deductions can materially change an actual check. We use annual rate schedules, not final-return IRS tax-table lookup. Projection mode assumes anticipated eligibility and correct year-end reporting; W-2 mode is still an approximation, not a filing service.
